The Changing of a Club's Name
To conform with International Board Policy on name changing, the Policy Manual reads :
CLUB NAME CHANGE PROCEDURE
For a Lions Club to change its name, the following information must be submitted to the Extension and Membership Division, at International headquarters :
- A letter of authorization from the Lions Club Board of Directors recommending the new name.
- An expression of opinion letter from the District Governor regarding the name change, and
- A letter consenting to the name change signed by an authorized officer of each of the other clubs that abut the Lions Club requesting the name change.
The new name for a club must comply with the requirements established in the Lions Clubs International Constitution and Board Policy.
OFFICIAL CLUB NAME
Each club shall be known by the name of the municipality, or the equivalent governmental subdivision in which it is located. In any municipality or equivalent governmental subdivision having more than one club, each club shall add a distinguishing designation to such name.
International Board Policy regarding official names of Lions clubs.
- A proposed Lions club must be known by the actual name of the "municipality" or its equivalent governmental subdivision in which it is located. The term "municipality" is construed to mean the city, town, village, prefecture or similar officially named governmental unit. If the proposed club is not located within a municipality, it must be known by the name of the smallest official governmental unit in which it is to be located.
A proposed club does not have a choice respective to the use of the "municipality" or "equivalent governmental subdivision." - The "distinguishing designation" for clubs located in the same "municipality" or equivalent governmental subdivision may be any name which clearly identifies the club from all other clubs in the same municipality or equivalent governmental subdivision. The term "Lioness" or other gender name cannot be used.
- The term "Host Club" shall be a title of prestige and recognition of the parent club in the municipality. It shall carry no other special priority, benefits or privileges.
- Lions clubs shall not be named after living individuals except those individuals who have served in the position as President of Lions Clubs International.
- No Lions club may add "International" as a distinguishing designation to its name.
